Lyon, France, 11 January 2024 - The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO) and the Centre Léon Bérard, will host co-jointly the workshop for the INTERCEPTOR consortium. INTERCEPTOR (Interception of oral cancer) is a European research network funded by the European Cooperation in Science & Technology (COST), led by Prof. Pierre Saintigny (Centre Léon Bérard and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) and Prof. Senada Koljenovic (Antwerp University Hospital/ University of Antwerp). Its main aim is to develop a new multidisciplinary approach and to reorganize disease care management by establishing support for people affected by oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), which will result in the prevention of malignant transformation.
As Dr Zisis Kozlakidis (Head of the Laboratory Services and Biobank Group at IARC/WHO), local host for the workshop, and Prof Saintigny explain: “There is a strong need to better prevent oral cancers. Oral cancers are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and a profound impact on a patient’s quality of life with significant functional, social and aesthetic sequelae. The early diagnosis and management of OPMD represent a unique opportunity to develop strategies that will prevent oral cancers.”
The workshop aims to discuss European and national initiatives that could be leveraged by the Interceptor network to develop new approaches for oral cancer prevention. It aims to discuss national programs implemented in order to reduce mortality and improve patients’ quality of life through early detection of OPMD and prevention of oral cancers. It also intends to develop synergies between the works of European networks and current initiatives on data structuring with the development of an observational registry.
In the last part of the meeting, a round table with all participants will take place to identify two or three strategic actions to be taken by the network to leverage national/EU initiatives on oral cancer prevention.
